Ginger - Ornamental Peacock Ginger

by Grasshopper 6. November 2009 09:44

I have two ornamental gingers growing in my garden, today I want to share with you details of my Peacock ginger (Kaempferia species).

My peacock gingers are planted in a bright but shaded part of the garden around the base of my ligustrum trees and there they have provided me with an extremely colorful ground cover. They grow into rounded clumps with the foliage showing amazing colorings with the small white blooms being an added bonus!

The peacock ginger is a warm weather tropical plant, which belongs to the Zingiberaceae family.

Peacock ginger enjoys bright shade or spotted sunlight. People are attracted to this plant because of the foliage, I think it is beautiful too as it provides wondeful evergreen colors through its showings. The foliage which has been likened to peacock feathers with its almost shimmering patterns of silver which run through its green and purple/maroon colorings are wondeful to see.

Spread is by rhizome division, so each year there are more clumps! Yeah!

Small lavender flowers which appear in the middle of the clumps on short stalks, are about an inch across, with a central white "eye". Peacock ginger blooms in early summer and it continues to blooms for several months.

In Florida, this ornamental ginger goes dormant in late fall to mid winter; the leaves vanish in winter and then reappear in the spring. However, perhaps I should mention that it always appears to be the last plant to reappear in my garden!
